My name is Joanna Steinhardt. I’m an anthropologist, writer, and editor with a PhD in Sociocultural Anthropology (UC Santa Barbara, 2018) and an MA in Cultural Studies (Hebrew University of Jerusalem, 2007). I have a background in religious studies (Jewish studies, new religious movements, contemporary spirituality, new age, psychedelics), and science and technology studies (biology, ecology, mycology, amateur and DIY science, citizen science, biohacking, ethology, earth science). I lived abroad in Japan and Israel in the ’00s, and I’m fluent (albeit a bit rusty) in Modern Hebrew. I was a fellow at the LA Review of Books Publishing Workshop in 2020.
As on April 2024, I work as an Associate Editor at Ayin Press, where I edit books and online articles, and help out with all aspects of the publishing process. I have also been an editor at Knology, a social science think tank, where I edited reports, online articles, and applications for funding. I have also copy-edited several academic books as a freelance editor.
